Service quality

Another one of the those days for the MBTA to shine -- like a bad penny.

Here's the scene. A Green Line train is sitting (and sitting and sitting) at Packard's Corner. It's about a minute or two before the light changes so it can continue its inbound crawl. The operator of the second car looks at the passengers assembling outside in the rain, trying to board, shrugs her shoulders -- and refuses to open the door.

But hey, it all worked out well (after some choice suggestions about how that operator should be splashed by a bus doing 50 through a puddle).

But then again, everything turned out fine. The next train was there in about a minute. And if I had missed that one I could have gotten on the next one a minute behind that.

Good thing I wasn't left in the rain by that well-spaced collection of trains.

Whatever happened to that concept that Danny was taling about. You know customer service?

And let me ask again -- why can't the T tell us, after seven months whether the Charlie system and it's jacked up fares have increased revenues? The Department of Revenue can do it monthly, why not the MBTA?

What are you hiding Danny?

This is actually proper procedure. The light cycle at Harvard Ave and Packard's Corner is horrendously long, and with trains admittedly piling up behind them, there was no reason to open the doors and risk missing the critical seconds where a trolley can actually enter the intersection.

It can often take more than a "minute or two" to load a train - especially in the rain when people mysteriously feel the need to pay in dimes that they must dig out of each article of clothing they happen to have on.

The signal at Packard's Corner should be removed. There is no need for a signal at this location. Everyone got through this intersection for many decades without a signal.

The best way to speed up Green Line service on Comm. Ave. would be to remove all signals west of BU except at Harvard Ave, Washington Street, Chestnut Hill Ave, and perhaps one or two other places.

As someone who crosses the intersection on foot regularly, I highly doubt that I could survive a week if the lights were removed. Especially crossing at the blind corner you encounter trying to cross the Westbound lane by Super 88 and the UPS Store.

The Green Line (especially the B) needs signal prioritization already. The T needs to hold off on commuter rail expansion for five minutes and work out some of the long-standing kinks in the system the CR pours into.

I probably should have mentioned that it was a second round of people -- maybe two or three of us at the back door.

Nor do I doubt it is proper procedure.

But is it (fare-paying) rider friendly, particular in the rain? Isn't that what the T is striving to do -- the little things like the short-lived "customer service agent" and go out of its way to improve service quality?

And as someone who crosses that awful intersection as often as often as necessary (sadly a lot), the light is necessary.

But signal prioritization is crucial, there and at every light down Comm. Ave. Want to speed up that ride from hell? Time the lights better!
