Don't get 'round much any more

Regular readers know this space is not occupied by a Red Sox fan. What is not as clear though, is while I may root for the Indians, I adore the space where the Red Sox play.

That's why today's George Vescey column in the New York Times (which after all owns 18 percent or some such interest in the Red Sox) is just too tough to take.

Vescey's credibility takes a steep hit right off the bat: "increasingly upscale Kenmore Square"?

George, you need to look beyond the Hotel Commonwealth. Spend some time with the homeless folks who sit outside the 7-11, the Dunkie and the ATM lobbies. Navigate the poor excuse for sidewalks. Look across the street at the perpetually under construction bus terminal.

The rest of the piece degenerates into sour grapes. The Red Sox have gotten the Yankees number twice in the last four years. The once-feared Bombers couldn't even win their division last year and some predict they won't even make the playoffs (Go Tribe!)

The House the Steinbrenner Built is rising in the South Bronx, which I suppose makes Kenmore Square upscale in comparison.

But really -- doesn't the Times have any standards for accuracy, even when it comes to columnists?

"So-called World Series??!!" What is that all about? This sounds like so much sour grapes. Yankee Stadium is going from the House that Ruth built (and Horace Clark renovated) to a new Stadium. They will gain seats and some comfort and lose a sense of baseball history. Apparently they can't stand the fact that Boston is trying to honor the history of our "tiny little band box" while raising enough money to compete with the Bronx Bombers. This looks like the "well, we haven't won a World Series in years and the Red Sox have won two, and we aren't really built to compete this year.....but we should still feel smug because we can criticize Kenmore Square" story. What's the point? Time to bury another t-shirt.

Yeah, I forgot the "so-called World Series" crack. That must only happen when the Yankees play the Mets. Or is that the Universe Series?

Vescey also ignores all the development deals the Sox are involved in around Fenway Park - and makes it sound like theres no construction going on around Fenway - which is what you'd expect from some bigfoot columnist from a city where they spend six hours digging through concrete to find a stupid T-shirt.
