Yes we did!

Forty-four years ago, a senator from Arizona lost an election -- but ushered in a new political era.

Tonight, another senator from Arizona lost an election and may have ushered in a new era too.

There are not enough superlatives to describe President-elect Barack Obama's victory. There is the obvious -- the first African-American to ever be elected to the nation's highest office -- 43 years after a Democratic Congress and President Lyndon Johnson engineered the Voting Rights Act that ensured African-Americans could actually vote.

Johnson -- who had overwhelmingly defeated Arizona Sen. Barry Goldwater -- proclaimed that by his actions Democrats would have lost the South for a generation. Well make that two. And despite some cracks in the solid South, today's results suggest there are still issues.

The same holds true for the "heartland" -- the swath of red states that encompasses the nation's bread basket.

But the fact that Obama was able to pick off some of those states -- Virginia at the moment with the potential for more -- speaks to his potential to rewrite the rules and change the vicious tone that has marked far too much of the "conservative" rule.

The repudiation of George Walker Bush -- a faux conservative who thought swagger translated into authority -- should send thoughtful Americans of all political persuasions into thoughtful conversations about how we can work together instead of fight apart.

Obama has the tools to help us make this transition. It will not be an easy task -- the sniping of The Dittoheads will begin almost immediately.

But the future of this nation requires us to shun the noxious message they have peddled for too long.

I am not willing to give up my beliefs after enduring the sneers offered for people who think like that. But I'm willing to reach across the divide and try to heal the wounds. Join me.

What a beautiful moment for America! What a lovely thing to see after the pain of the sixties. The last eight years show the sharp contrast of what we do not want!
This man has had such incredible strength and has the gift of oratory so that even tonight he is humble, gracious, intelligent and idealistic.
I enjoyed the way the President-Elect communicated directly with me and his wife as well. CNN is putting the loser on the air more than Barack Obama. They use words that are more divisive without regard for the ramifications of their inflammatory views. Even in the hot moment of victory the news station cannot celebrate the LANDSLIDE victory we are enjoying tonight. But Barack not only welcomes all but states that he "needs" them. He truly seeks unification of the states because this is his moment of triumph and he uses it to lift all of us up a little bit higher and to aspire to become the best again.

It is sad how many people believe our economic system works from the bottom up. I know of no poor man who is hiring, I know of no poor man who is giving. I do know those who have, who are now planning on laying off, I do know those who have, who are not spending, and those who are keeping there money and not giving as much, if at all. Many of the charities that I'm familiar with are run by big hearted liberal causes, but they call on there rich friends to assist financially to those cause. Well guess what happens when you increase that rich persons taxes 5%. His giving and investing goes down by 5%. Other times, it means the boss has to cover his tax bill instead of payroll. Guess who gets laid off? The person who voted for all federally funded benifits to come to them. So now they require more goverement assistance as they stand in an unemployement line. The Democrats now have you locked in to there way of thinking. Tax the rich guy and give a continued helping hand to the poor. I tried to keep this short note simple so that all the democrat's reading can understand why there boss hands them a pink slip, or why in 4 years there not rich yet. Getting rich is all about hard disciplined work, not by getting anything for nothing or from our government.

He must first provide a valid birth certificate in a number of states before he will get the votes in the Electoral College. There are just too many lawsuits for Obama's lawyers to ignore. If he indeed was born in Kenya as his paternal grand-mother claims he will be ineligible to become President.

Now, we wait to see what policies will be emplaced and what the outcome will be. Only 55 million voters are worried. The other 62 million are very hopeful.

Be alert citizens.
Beware of liberal ideals that may well turn the United States of America into the United Social State of America. USSA!

He has a really hard job. We need to wish him well and hope that he has the political sophistication to govern as well as he campaigned. Also, he needs to remember, ofter these heady days pass, that he does not have a mandate for all of specific policy proposals, but rather a majority of people who think he has the ability to bring us together.

A few facts to settle the doubts and fears of a few of the negative posters here. First of all, I have researched via Truth in Information act and found President-elect Obama's (boy, that feels fantastic to write!) certified birth certificate in the National Database!! He was born in Hawaii, no doubt about it. This is a certified site, not a blog, post, group, whatever.
Next, he is NOT against guns in our homes (I personally wish he were), he has no intention of changing the Constitution-which is really funny considering we have had a president who trampled on it, ignored it, and overrode it in every possible way. Also, he is not against offshore drilling. He just believes, as do several throughout this great country that we need to not depend only on the oil in our country, but wants to delve deeper into alternative fuel sources like air, solar, biofuel, etc. I see nothing wrong with that at all.
I am not a "liberal" which so many people seem to use as a curse word but I do love my country and want to see her become the great wonderful country she used to be.

Thank you, j39jones. As I was reading down to your comment I was sickened by the ignorance that still permeates our country. I began formulating a response in my mind and then got to your comment. Thank you again

One thing that I don't understand is why everyone thinks this is a positive change?

Our Congressional "Leaders" have been introducing and enacting the laws that govern our country today, playing an enormous part in our current situation.

All we have done is give more power to those who have had the responsibility to prevent from happening the economic and political issues we have today, but failed totally.

One thing is true, a lot of African Americans voted for Obama for one reason, HE IS BLACK. They didn't dive into the issues or even care about them at all. The fact that an Afican American was on the ticket was enough for them. Now it's funny to me that a man born of a WHITE MOTHER is going to be the first Afican American elected as president, not the first BI-RACIAL person to be elected as president, which is really what he is. I don't remember anyone wearing Bill Clinton t-shirts or Jimmy Carter T-shirts for god's sake. He is just another politician with empty promises that he cannot possibly keep. With that being said, I hope for all of our sakes that he was the right choice because hell's coming if he's not. I hope that he doesn't have terrorist ties and I hope he doesn't try to take my guns(good luck with that) and I hope he does the right thing with our troops, and PLEASE CAPTURE OSAMA BIN LADEN!!
