Turning down the volume

Kudos to Barack Obama for doing what a president has not done in a long time -- admit fallibility.

By calling Cambridge Police Sgt. James Crowley -- and joking about having a beer with him and Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., Obama showed a side that neither George W. Bush nor Bill Clinton every showed.

No swaggering before saying he can't think of a mistake he made. And no parsing words to a fare the well.

Nothing changes the fact the nation needs a frank discussion about race and the widely disparate views of black men and white men about what constitutes bad behavior. But let's conduct that discussion with some civility.

I know it won't stop the Obama haters who will do the verbal parsing and note he never apologized, But for the rest of us, it's more than good enough.

Yes, Bar' sure squeezed the wind out of that thing. And the lesson is...
Magnanimity ennobles and if observed from the get go this whole mess coulda been avoided.

"Whats up Doctor Gates, you got locked out of your house?"

"Some meddlesome fuss budget made a call, no issue here, we have more important things to do... have a great day."

Believe it or not that IS the normal Cambridge PD routine. I live in a complex with a performance gallery and Avante garde jazz bands play there.

One time we had a kid recital for their parents, jazz kids coming home from college, pretty moms, family stuff.

A crazy neighbor called the gendarmes even though it is okay to have music til 10pm.

The cops show up, spot a bevy of prosperous fetching hausefraus and kids hauling muisc gear to cars. They chat a bit and the Officer in charge turns to his sidekick

..'Jeeze Sully, this is ridiculous..we have more important things to worry about..have a nice night ma'am"..

That is the Cambridge PD I know and like.

All true, but too bad he queered his own press conference. He wanted the focus to be healthcare, and he blew it.

He's still learning that it is the short, unexpected outtakes that make the news.
