The politics of incivility

Whatever happened to the concept of you can disagree without being disagreeable? And why am I not surprised it was a South Carolina Republican who raised political incivility to new levels?

Coming hard on the heels of the conservatives epic flight of fantasy over Barack Obama's speech to schoolchildren, we now have the image of Joe Wilson yelling out "you lie" during Barack Obama's address to a joint session of Congress.

Not only is Wilson the liar on the subject of whether legislation that hasn't even been finalized contains provisions about health care coverage for undocumented aliens, his total lack of respect for the office, not to mention the man, is hardly the stuff of gentlemanliness -- Southern of otherwise.

And I ask again, hasn't the battle cry of Republicans been -- at least when one of their own was in the White House -- that the president deserves our respect, simply because of his office?

Did Wilson offer a similar response when he listened to his own governor, Mark Sanford, try to explain he was simply walking the Appalachian Trail?

If Wilson were an honorable man, he would resign. I'm not counting on it.

What Joe Wilson did was wrong. So is the constant lying going on by both sides.Illegal aliens are included in the long term health care plans. Do you honestly think the presidents path to citizenship does not include health care ?
Death panels are a lie and so is " If you like your health care you can keep it " Employers decide where employees get their health care and they will flock to the least expensive choice to stay in business.
Revenue neutral... give me a break.
Tell me the truth. Include serious tort reform to eliminate defensive medicine. Use the publicly paid option to set up a seiries of clinics located near hospitals to eliminate the emergency room as primary care problem. There is a workable option to the dreck both sides are feeding us now. Kill the sacred cows and you get reform. Keep them and you have a bunch of politicians blowing smoke.

Wilson did nothing Dems have not done before, Booed at Bush, Harry Reid calling Bush a loser etc. While Dems think this benefits them I see something else. SO far I have seen media actually fact check and expose Obama's lies on Ilegal Aliens.

I agree. wilson may have been wrong to yell during the speech but he was at least speaking his mind, and from his heart. washington is all about lies, they say whatever they think will get them re-elected. I know that dems have been doing the same thing for the past 8 years and they called it patriotism. I don't think a single democrat had respect for the office of President when Bush was in office. Now instead of calling it patriotism, they give him dirty looks and say that it will destroy his career. If it does loose him the election then the people of South carolina are truly less intelligent than I would give them credit for. they should latch onto his comments and use them as a rallying call to stop this blatent disregard for the public opinion and the public welfare.

Obama claims that his plan will not effect those that already have Medical Insurance?Suppose you are a small business owner that has a health plan for your employees. Your friends/neighbors have an Obama health plan. Why should you continue to pay for your employees medical insurance and also for the Obama plan. Wouldn't you drop your health plan? How about paying for abortions? Obama says that his plan contains no provision for abortion funds. Unless there is a definite clause stating it, there is no guarantee that the absence of such a provision means that no funds for abortion.

Wilson just said what a lot of us would like to say. I wish others in congress had stood with him. Why are we so afraid to speak the truth?!

The English Parliment does it more openly. My only criticism of Wilson is that he gave fodder to the adoring fools in the democrap party. What troubles me more, in fact, was the press conference by the President this morning standing between two enormously overweight and unhealthy "nurses". He nominated a somewhat overweight person to be Surgeon General and now he stands between two specimens from the Franklin Zoo. Is THAT his view of health care prevention?

What a bunch repug racist, sexist, idiots we have on this blog. You don't want health care reform of any kind because your all afraid of change. Grow up! Bush wouldn't have stood for this and playing it out like he was so tolerant and forgiving is just you playing sour grapes because you lost the election. Obama is a gentleman, he ignored the bad antics of grown men who should have known better. If you had listened to the speech with an open mind you would have heard that Obama was outlining what he wants for reform. Do you people ever come down from your ivory towers to speak to people besides fellow 'believers'. You would see what is going on in the world around you if you did. The average American wants health care, reform or otherwise. They haven't any healthcare, NONE! Bush did nothing to help, any more than he did for Katrina victims. Give us all a break and crawl back into your little hidie holes and read something besides rightwing garbage and listen to someone beside Rush Slimbausgh, then you can join the adults conversation.

It was inappropriate. It was beneath a representative. it was an attack on the office of the presidency, something I can't stand no matter who is president.

He said the truth.

Any illegal can walk across the border, walk into a health clinic, and the public pays for it. Nothing in this bill changes it.

Obama is a liar.

Wilson is miscreant.

I think we should applaud Joe Wilson for having the guts to say what was on his mind. How many of you would sit there and listen to someone tell lies like our dear President keeps on doing????

I can't believe the inappropriate and disrespectful behavior towards our president.

The pride I feel when I hear Barack Obama speak about his goals and dreams for our country make me want to work even harder to be a productive and positive member of society. I am saddened by the foul stench of disrespect that was so blatantly hurled at the leader of our country, OUR President. To respect the right of another to voice their opinion is one thing, but have we learned anything by such displays as this...heckling our President? How low can you go, why not propose something you feel is going to benefit our nation rather than spouting hateful rhetoric that does...nothing?

So hospitals and doctors under Obama's plan are indemnified when they refuse to treat an undocumented patient? I think not. No doubt about it, Joe was right - Obama lied.

Check your own premiums...if you have coverage. Evaluate the spiralling cost of health insurance with higher copays, deductibles and fewer and fewer services each renewal year. For all there is to disagree about, you must admit that there is a need for healthcare reform (whether or not you agree with the proposal). When you can no longer afford a life saving medication or even an aspirin, call your elected Representative about it...blog us all with their response.
NJPinelander22 offers a few noteworthy points - the sacred "cash" cows must be dealt with, there is a workable solution and it is not party specific.
Focus on the ISSUE.

The ONLY limitation for illegal aliens in the bill is that they won't be able to the cheaper, subsidized "poor people's" plan. they will have the right to buy insurance through this program just like real citizens. Wilson was right. And since they don't pay taxes, they will not be supporting the plan like the rest of us.

And this is hardly the first time decorum has suffered in Congress. Like the time Democratic Representative Preston Brooks walked into the Senate and caned Senator Charles Sumner into unconsciousness.

Rude, but accurate.

Wow OL, you are a stop in the wingnuttia commentariat sputter rounds. Who knew?

I was on a fun road trip along the maine coast yesterday and as we were coming home late, my friend roamed through the car radio dial and found some sputtering yammering wing nut called Mark Levin.

O's speech has notched up the wingnut hysteria and foam increasingly flecks their lips. They took a huge hit.

Meanwhile, our driver Karen finds out today that her Health care provider doctor coded a mammogram for a 500 dollar charge when the terms of the policy solemnly assures it is supposed to be free...guaranteed.

I fly under the radar and find the structure of Mittcare to be deceptive, quasi useless and despicable, a gravy train for the insurance lobby that owns the commonwealth.
