Rooting through the trash

What, exactly, is gained by publishing a 50-year-old FBI memo alleging the Ted Kennedy rented a brothel in Chile in 1961?

Nevertheless, the allegations are plastered over the Globe and Herald as if his well-known peccadilloes are newsworthy more than a year after his death -- and decades after he turned his life around.

The files -- mucked up by the conservative Judicial Watch -- should at the very least re-open the door to the reign of terror conducted over the middle of the 20th century by former FBI director and cross-dresser J. Edgar Hoover, whose career was marked by collecting scandalous if not necessarily true items about the powerful while hiding his own.

Kennedy haters are rejoicing at the latest round of muck flung at the late senior senator from Massachusetts and they reflect the paranoia that marked the Hoover years. Says Judicial Watch's Tom Fitton:
We think that Senator Kennedy was terribly corrupt, and we thought the FBI files would detail some more about that, so we wanted to complete the historical record,’’ he said.
Hardly the characterization I would draw from files that mirror the gutter mentality of Hoover.

But an even bigger question is the relevance and value of dredging the muck -- and giving it prominent news play, at a time when we would seem to have far more important issues.

For example, I find it far more relevant in today's hardball GOP world, to note the fact Ronald Reagan once served as a union president. Shocking! And also about as well known as Ted Kennedy's wandering eyes.

In some of the more famous words of the Hoover era:
Have you no sense of decency sir, at long last? Have you left no sense of decency?

Well I agree with your argument that while Kennedy was a whore-monger it could have been worse, he could have been a union president! Of wait that's the same thing...

Lame lame lame excuse making... BTW Kennedy's a traitor who sold out America to the Soviets for political gain. Defend that.

What's sad is your need to keep attacking him, even after he's dead and buried. Defend that.

What I would like to see stopped is the building of these huge libraries at tax-payer expense that are shrines to these dead politicians, on both the left and the right. If they want to finance something privately and maybe some like Kerry can afford to, fine. No taxpayer money for dead politicians.
